The fatuous State of the Union address by the Obamessiah was an exercise in the rehashing of his effete and trite socialism that includes attacks and hostility towards not just the the people that work, save and create wealth but also ultimately traditional American values of thrift and responsibility that is so important to the fabric of American life. What people see in this empty suit is completely beyond my comprehension and has mystified me ever since he showed up on the political scene. I really have never understood America's fascination with this worthless man. Maybe this man resonates with the people since traditional America has truly died over the past 50 years at the hands of the Democrat hard left that have allowed for abortion on demand and have imposed self destructive utopian redistribution of income.

But lets take one passage from this speech and think about both what is being said and how intelligent it is to say such things.....

I’m a Democrat. But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more. That’s why my education reform offers more competition, and more control for schools and States. That’s why we’re getting rid of regulations that don’t work. That’s why our health care law relies on a reformed private market, not a Government program.

What is this person thinking? Honestly, I think that this is the rantings of a very confused man. First, this administration has led a monumental increase in regulation and intervention in private markets and has not led any major initiative in deregulating or eliminating even those regulations that do not work. Furthermore, government has taken the portfolio of more than what people cannot do for themselves but also much much more. Government has now interjected itself in nearly every facet of American life. His claims are stupid and ill considered claim.

The Obamessiah's reference to Lincoln and the implication that the 16th president believed that the legitimate function of government is to do for people what they cannot do for themselves, and no more is both misunderstanding the context of what of Lincoln considered and a provocative misstatement of a philosophy of truly graceful and thoughtful man in order to serve the Obamessiah's broad socialist agenda. What Lincoln actually said was...

The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities.

I presume that this leaves all other things that they are capable of doing still in their portfolio of rights and responsibilities. I do take exception to Lincoln's statement since in its simple form it would appear as if one could construe it to mean that government has a legitimate function in any situation that particularly in today's times could be done better by a large entity such as government. Whereas in Lincoln's times, no one would even conceive nor condone of the interventions that governments takes today, it is still a dangerous thought that will ultimately and has led government to overextend their reach into life where they have no place being. These simple words, seemingly innocuous are being used to extend this dangerous and potentially disastrous philosophy that will ultimately lead to a total loss of liberty to the leviathan as it increasingly consumes American life.

But what really irritates me is hearing the argument for limited government from a man whose true philosophy is completely the opposite of limited government. The Obamessiah believes in an all encompassing central government that even seeks to compel its citizens to purchase a good or service by the pure virtue that one exists. The recent healthcare law is a fiasco to all that believe in the concept of limited government. If government can compel you to buy health insurance, there is nothing that they cannot compel you to do. The operative phrase in the Obameesiah's nmisquote 'and no more' has not only been ignored and overlooked but has been greatly surpassed by decades of government intervention and meddling in countless areas of American life. For this President to cravenly quote Lincoln to support his justification for government adventurism is not just a shame but shows the depths that the beast will dig to bury the nation.

But Lincoln did get it right with this quote....

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Democrats believe that they have the right to seize property from high earning and hard working people in order to distribute it to the needy instead of allowing people to give to charity on their own. This overlooks the unfortunate facts that government does relatively little for the poor and is really a redistribution channel to people that have voted themselves government benefits such as the elderly. Additionally, what person in their right mind actually believes that government has clue as to who the needy are what needs to be done to assist them? Its simply absurd that the leviathan can possibly deliver the goods but people have a spiritual faith in the capacity of a central government to do these kinds of things. It simply boggles my mind to think that these people believe it and have overlooked the spectacular failures that this government and multitudes of others have fostered over time.

The budget impasse raises comparable questions. Can we resolve it before some ill-defined crisis imposes its own terms? For years, there has been a "something for nothing" aspect to our politics. More people became dependent on government. From 1960 to 2010, the share of federal spending going for "payments to individuals" (Social Security, food stamps, Medicare and the like) climbed from 26 percent to 66 percent. Meanwhile, the tax burden barely budged. In 1960, federal taxes were 17.8 percent of national income (gross domestic product). In 2007, they were 18.5 percent of GDP.

The nation is definitely in denial. The United States has allowed the leviathan to do things that no government does well since this was thought as easy solutions to problems and in some cases to no problem at all. At the time, there was lots of prosperity due to there being lots of healthy and productive young people and a time when the drag on an economy from central planning stupidity was minor. Now, as the demographics have changed, the drag from central planning stupidity and the Marxist wealth redistribution emanating from the core of the Democratic party have hit hard not just the United States but is also manifesting itself currently in Europe.

Governments cannot be tasked with providing healthcare or retirement savings since as we have found out, all of the taxes, every little bit of it, that was collected to provide these benefits in old age to those that paid it have been spent and sometimes on things completely unrelated to retiree health and transfer payments. The money that is supposedly saved on our behalf does not exist. Its a lie. Government has shown that it just cannot be trusted with our money, so why do some fight to either give government more of our money (actually fight to have someone else give more of their money) \ or fight to continue benefits that clearly cannot be sustained indefinitely? Its a mystery to me, people have chosen to suspend reality but I think that at its core the philosophy flows from the 'something for nothing' crowd. We have built and sustained a group of people that somehow feel that since they have the good fortune to have been born within a specific set of national borders that the others that also live within this specific set of national borders owe them a life.

But, since we now have so many people are now dependent upon government for sustenance, we can expect that they will support that government as long as they can. Anyone that tries to take this away will be fought ferociously and no one can argue that it is not normal and its to be expected. However, just because we expect this kind of behavior, it does not make it legitimate that these people have a call on other's earnings. And considering as Marxist Democrats are arguing, that raising taxes on these people that are still productive and earning money is justified and moral, we have to consider that this is just the next step in an oppressive leviathan that will seek to seize what it needs and wants through its supposed legitimate taxing authority. Not only will this fail to raise even a sliver of what is needed, the process is vilifying those that are successful in an attempt to justify seizing their assets to distribute to the population. So, a society that is vilifying successful people where those that work and save are bad and is completely convinced through philosophy or just survival needs that since they were born or now live on a specific piece of property that they deserve the product of other's labors. This will only one day face a day of reckoning and this day is much much closer than we have imagined. That day of reckoning is upon Europe now and is giving us a view of what will happen in the US in the near future.

Ron Paul..."Liberty was split into personal liberty and economic liberty." Paul is implying that that this is not a legitimate nor useful government endeavor. Government has tried on its face to maintain personal liberty but has conducted a full assault on economic liberty over the past 80 years.

Yes, both are equally important and they are ultimately not divisible. These liberties cannot be split and then treated differently. Ultimately, one CANNOT have personal liberty without having economic liberty. With the elimination of economic liberty, personal liberties will eventually dissipate due to an almost complete intervention by an overreaching central government.

Government has been increasingly intervening in markets due to these two reasons:

1. Once you allow government any latitude in intervening in economic affairs, the first intervention becomes the reasoning justifying the next intervention.
2. Intervention by government eliminates competing free market solutions and crowds out other solutions, products and services. Markets naturally become dependent upon greater and greater market central government interventions till government initiatives almost completely controls the mechanisms of markets. A very fine example of this is the American housing market that collapsed due to extreme government meddling for decades.

However, I warn here, as government takes and takes more and more power and responsibility in the market place, they will also chip away at personal liberties. One day, we will wake up and wonder what happened to the United States.

We will wonder what happened to the great experiment in liberty. We will wonder how we allowed the leviathan central government to make decisions on our behalf and require us to its bidding.

However, as we can see from this chart that exports to China have grown tremendously over the recent history....

What the heck is going through people's minds when they attack China? This kind of behavior is completely beyond my comprehension and I think that it is generally caused by a lack of ability to actually offer intelligent solution to problems. So these political figures resort to attacking outsiders. Here we see that exports to China exceed $10 billion a month. A trade war or hostility towards China would most likely lead to retaliation against US products. This will hurt employment in the industries that currently benefit from exports to China and this will probably not be offset in any gain in employment for the fantasy of shifting production back to the US.

Of course, who is so naive to think that politicians actually have the best interest of their constituents ion mind anyway? So, just contemplate this thought....

In the business world, picking a needless trade fight with one of your best customers would be the height of folly. For many members of Congress, it has become an urgent item on their legislative agenda."

The foundation of the US was an experiment in individual liberty and a limitation on the portfolio of powers and obligations of the central authority. For decades now, this very government has intruded upon the rights and responsibilities of the states and individuals and have almost completely upended the liberty of people to make choices in many aspects of their lives. The bottom line, is that the government through this legislation is naturally creating and environment will it can require you to OR not do anything that they deem to be in the best interest of the nation as a while....

If Congress can require individuals to buy or otherwise obtain and maintain health insurance simply because they may be said to impact commerce by their very existence, without regard to any particular activity in which they have chosen to engage, then there is no limit on federal power. For example, if Congress can require you to buy health insurance because your lack of insurance may, at some point in the future, impose costs on the wider economy, then on the same theory it can require the purchase (or sale) of virtually any good or service, since the failure to have or use the relevant product can always be said to have some economic impact.

The Commerce Clause in its creation by the founders WAS NOT a broad power that allowed the leviathan to do almost anything that they want. It was a restriction of states authority to restrict commerce amongst themselves. To consider this to be a right of the central government to intervene in markets particularly on the flimsy pretences that are being bandied about on this legislation is not only sill, stupid and juvenile but destructive. When the central government requires or mandates, the citizens have no choice and their liberty has been restricted. If a states does the same thing, a citizen can choose to move if it is too onerous. This market reaction and voting with one's feet keeps states from overstepping their own people but these limits do not exist when these things are foisted upon the citizenry nationally.

For those that argue that states can do these things that I so abhor, yes, they can and i will still abhor these market interventions. However, it is absolutely the right and intention of the federalist system that states can experiment and that they can succeed or fail. Then people have the choice of living there or leaving since Americans are a very mobile people. Bad decisions will eviscerate a state and survival will force these states to adjust to reality. However, bad decisions on the federal level can cause the whole nation to collapse as we see with Europe. The experiment there with socialism is a dismal failure and Europe 20 years from now will not look at all like it does now. And the error that happened there was the centralization of decision making and pan European regulation that crushed the spirit and nature of people there. They created an entitlement mentality that will take decades to squeeze out of the psyche of Europeans.

The wide and getting much wider wealth gap..... As liberals go wild over the New York Times crusade against people that work and earn high incomes and defining through the false god of the Gini Coefficient, that somehow incomes in the US are unfair, one has to look at the actual wealth gap between the young and old also.

As we can see from above, the median (not average which is probably even higher) wealth for those family heads 65 and older are more than 50 times the medium wealth of those family heads 35 or younger. But as we constantly hear the frothing-at-the-mouth liberal New York Times hysterically crowing that the income gap in the US is widening, one conversely seldom hears anything about this widening wealth gap metric. There are 2 reasons for this:

1. It is extremely difficult to tax wealth but easy to tax income and increasing government tax revenue is the quest that the socialist New York Times is promoting.
2. Elderly, won't tolerate the newspaper illuminating the subject and this group of people have outsized wealth and clout and therefore has the ability to affect newspapers editorial policy.

The largest transfer of income and wealth in the history of humanity is taking place through the taxing of young working people. And the payments from the poor are being made to the wealthiest single class of people in the history of the world. And this is fair? I just do not think so.

The elderly and their strength in voting, due to their numbers, are able to vote themselves greater and greater proportions of national income through disgusting and undeserved transfer payments. These payments are coming from young working class to the feeding at the trough wealthy elderly.

Remembering the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville 200 years ago, who was astounded at the success of the American experiment in liberty thoughtfully contemplating that it was due to the moral Christian fiber of the nation, considered "When (Americans) discover that they can vote themselves money from the public till, the experiment will be over."

We do not have to look too far to see where people have been voting themselves income when one considers Social Security and Medicare. And the recent troubles surrounding Occupy Wall Street centers on another class of people, the laziest of the young demanding their own handout. Since their numbers are much much smaller than the elderly voting block, they have and will resort to threatening and violent behavior to shake-down America for their handouts too.

Government should not be involved in schemes to provide retirement income, healthcare or any other good or service outside of their Constitutional portfolio as defined in that document. Functions outside of these limited powers are the functions of the states or holy cow, the people themselves! We are on the slippery slope of communism and if we allow it to continue, this will not end well. in addition to losing our economic freedom, we will also lose our personal liberties.

This piece is just too important to miss. It really cuts through much of the nonsense that we hear from useless hard left traditional media such as the New York Times. But the bottom line is; do we want to have a robust economy that rewards hard work and success or do we want a nation driven from a central planning platform in Washington that focuses on equality of outcomes? In the end, continuous envy of success will only destroy the nation and punitive taxes will ensure that the destruction will be complete and thorough....

The United States is now in the midst of killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. That current strategy is failing in the face of economic stagnation, even with no increase in tax rates. It will quickly crumble if tax increases are used to feed the current coalition of unions and farmers who will receive much of the revenue, while the employment prospects of ordinary people languish for want of the major capital investments that often depend on the wealth of the privileged one percent of the population.

A nation cannot survive if it BOTH wants the wealth creators to create jobs/national wealth and pay punitive taxes. There two are mutually exclusive and cannot be achieved.

And what about taxes the seem to be the permanent bee in the liberals bonnet? It is very difficult to discern if punitive taxes on the wealthy through heavily progressive tax rates may or may not be effective at achieving the goals of the nation. So then why do Democrats and liberals insist on them? Because it has nothing to do with economics or determining optimal levels of taxation but everything to do with faith in socialism that has created a core need to lead vicious attacks on those that work, create and save. Higher taxes is the blue blood that flows thorough the veins of modern liberalism and so what about these taxes? I think that there is absolutely no reasonable argument that the level of progressivity in the tax code is optimal other than baseless desires by Democrats to make it even more progressive....

But what about the flat tax? Frank and others are right to note that a return to the flat tax will result in an enormous redistribution of income to the top one percent from everyone else. But why assume that the current level of progressivity sets the legitimate baseline, especially in light of the current anemic levels of economic growth? What theory justifies progressive taxation in the first place? The current system presupposes that this nation can continue to fund the aspirations of 99 percent out of the wealth of the one percent. That will prove to be unsustainable. A return to a flatter tax (ideally a flat) tax will have just the short-term consequences that Frank fears. It will undo today’s massively redistributivist policies. But it will also go a long way toward unleashing growth in our heavily regulated and taxed economy.

Clearly, socialism doesn't and didn't work. It didn't work in Russia, 1960's China, North Korea, North Vietnam, et al, and the loss of liberty that comes in such environments; the destruction of people, families and society should not to be overlooked either.

Rational people have to fight against these urges to legally steal from others under the hard left guise of "justice" through a national tax code where people have no choice but to pay or stop working. its self destructive and frankly stupid, so why are we even considering such lunacy?

Putting it another way, will the 21st century American Way be the dynamic, entrepreneurial capitalism of Schumpeter or the static, state capitalism of Keynes?

Keynes would be hugely disappointed in how his political/economic thought has been hijacked by the Communist Democrats these days. But that is for another time.

At the end, do we want a life in the US of pushing everyone to the lowest common denominator with the 'elites' that have government access and perks benefit at the expense of the rest of us or do we seek a dynamic and robust economic life where winners are rewarded and conversely the losers actually experience losses that they justly deserve? I think that the founders of the nation had it exactly correct that the central government should be one of limited powers and this is not anywhere near where we are today where the central government is instrumental in creating winners and losers.

In this kind of environment, like we have seen in North Korea, the Cold War Soviet Union, 1960's fascist China, the Soviet Eastern Bloc of influence et al, central planning not only has a gigantic detrimental impact on the economic life of a nation, but this collectivization of resources destroy the liberty of the people. This is what we have in store if we continue down this path.

It's easy to understand the appeal of certain regulation. If we'd had the right oversight in place, we would have limited the degree of the financial crisis, which included bailouts measured in hundreds of billions of dollars and millions of people losing their homes due to foreclosures. But we also would have sacrificed innovations in credit and a vibrant financial sector.

Moreover, the real problem with regulation is that it often doesn't work very well, in part because it's always considering problems in the rearview mirror. The financial system today is almost dizzyingly complex and moving at light speed, and new rules tend to address fairly precise things, like banning specific types of securities or deals.

Emphasis is mine. The opiate of government capability to actually have a positive impact on the long-term health of an industry or nation is highly questionable. We need to recognize that government is political, that they dole out favors to those that they like therefore creating winners and losers within the context of any intervention that they make. This is just not efficient nor effective. These interventions can be arbitrary and ultimately creates lower value for the nation as a whole.

The huge difficulties facing the Euro are symbolic of the deep-seated problems enveloping the European Union today. Chief among them is a lack of economic freedom -- thanks to over-regulation of businesses, high tax rates and massive welfare spending as well as heavily protectionist measures (such as the Common Agricultural Policy) that limit free trade outside the EU.

Sounds like where the United States is heading these days. What the European experiment with economic union and the common currency, the Euro, did was to codify the socialist welfare state eliminating the formerly tenuous free market economic state. This is the reason why one could hear the talk of harmonizing taxes across the union since without harmonization, there would be actual competition between the states on taxes. Also, the central authority in Europe foisted deadening regulations onto businesses and people across the continent that promise to move jobs and economic creation out of the region.\

However, where I dispute the common wisdom is that I think that it was not the Euro that is going to kill Europe, but it is the continuous stupid regulation of business, banks and people that created an environment where a common currency is doomed.

But additionally, the message to the rest of Europe is that it will not be that painful so you all can keep borrowing and spending and promising things to people that you will never be able to deliver.....

So, yes, I want such turbulence, which will never be fully-eradicated, nor should it be in a free-market system, to now lessen to more manageable levels. Yet the responses of our politicians to recent financial troubles – hiding behind complexity and kicking the can down the road – have not only failed to temper the volatility, but have actually made it much worse.

Typical socialism, like that practiced in Europe and Washington relies upon the belief that government is actually capable of knowing what can be done but also how to execute it. The idea that Europe can extricate itself from the mess that the governments there created is silliness. They are not dealing with the fundamental problem and that is that centrally planned socialist economies go moribund and unproductive over time. The current mess with Greece, just the tip of the iceberg, is not the problem. Its the whole idea that governments can be everything to everybody. With Greece, they will not only not be able to successfully work this problem out but the message to the other troubled economies there is 'don't worry' you do not have to work that hard on getting things straightened out.

Europe should allow Greece to default. And let the markets work out the costs and consequences to this event. Then there will be precedent to work through the other inevitable problems that loom on the horizon.

As the USA doubles down on socialism and the sense of entitlement that others owe a living to the average populace continues unabated, not only can one can look at what is going on now as an indicator of what to expect but also anticipate that it will be much worse in the future. At the root of the problem, people believe in the opiate of government intervention but will end up being completely disappointed since not only are these very governments wholly unable to solve these kinds of problems but these very same governments were instrumental in creating the economic mess that we find ourselves in. This is the classic situation where we need to consider the saying, 'when one finds oneself in a hole, stop digging.' Fully expect that continuing or doubling down on these same self destructive policies that created the mess that we have no hope of ever getting out without a cathartic cleansing that will necessarily completely change the nation. Things will only get much worse.

As a result of socialism, governments have run-up huge debts and these economies can no longer support these high levels levels of debt. As we see happening in Europe, currently manifested in Greece that will spread to other countries over the next several months, out of control social spending and government borrowing to support this riotous spending will destroy the European socialist model. Critical government European market functions such as healthcare and retirement income will not be delivered and since government crowded legislated out other delivery mechanisms eliminating other competing market providers that could take up the slack, Europeans will have to learn to live without.

The solution to the 2008 financial crisis crafted by self-identified brilliant politicians by shifting private debt where individuals and corporations were naturally deleveraging to governments by embarking on a spending and borrowing spree were in a desperate but hopeless crusade of keeping the economy rolling along. All that this has achieved is a more fragile state of affairs and one that will be even more difficult to right as time goes on since ultimately it will have to be the private competitive economy that has to perform to keep living standard up for common people....

Some analysts, including Criton Zoakos, argue that the global economy has reached a “point of no return.” Debt suffocates growth, which destroys equity values (particularly financial stocks), which diminishes lending, investment, and consumption. Falling tax receipts lead to even more debt. Optimists argue not to worry. The world since January 2008, they say, has been undergoing an important period of public and private deleveraging. Growth will resume once deleveraging is completed.

If only life were that simple! Global indebtedness, according to Zoakos, has actually increased by 17 percent since the beginning of 2008. Nations have enacted generous bailout and stimulus programs while growth has averaged an anemic 1.2 percent.

After Europe collapses, it will be the US that has to finally deal with profligate and stupid central government government spending and a huge debt that will have no chance of being serviced without some kind of debt restructuring. Get ready for an environment that could cause massive economic dislocations and global starvation.

There is a good reason why Americans distrust their government.... it has failed miserably in delivering the Utopian promises that it has made. The government has bastardized the social contract and has inserted its greasy fingers in so many aspects of American life.

However, as the hard-left New York Times concludes from the poll, they see that the juvenile Occupy Wall Street protests, soak the rich tax policies and wealth redistribution are still very popular among too many Americans and these effete American socialist attitudes still infect American thinking. This just indicates to me that we are a long-long way from getting back on the path to prosperity and that things will probably get much worse before it gets better.

Self destructive socialist policies emanating from bad 1930's New Deal economic interventions have transformed the nation into a wide swath of entitlement babies where common people now think that others owe them a living. This will have to be reduced if the nation is to survive. They should never have existed but due to the demographics of the babyboom, the nation indulged in an orgy of socialism.

The best medicine for the nation is to completely eliminate much of the central government's economic intervention and return to a state where productive work, savings and investment is rewarded instead of punished. There will be suffering but this will be better than the suffering that will take place down the road if we continue on the path of deadening central government directed socialism.
