Islam And The Koran...A Religion? My Rant....
The beauty of writing...I loved the way that this section was constructed.
Fazl-ur Rehman's comment was triggered by the furor over charges and the later acknowledgement by the US military that Guantanamo Bay interrogators had "mishandled'' the Koran - desecrated, in the more precise language of the Muslim world. This outrage was compounded by Pakistan's raw, sectarian politics. Twice in a few days, suicide bombers left dozens dead and wounded at mosques in Islamabad and Karachi, while nearby, crowds chanted protests against the United States. No wonder Pakistanis are questioning the US-Pakistan alliance.
Of course it starts with the obligatory anti-American near-truth that most leftists, journalists and USA haters have to continue to repeat in order for it to become the half-truth that it is [more on this later]. The interesting thing with this Standard essay, is that it does point out the slaughter and the suicide bombings are happening but the feeble minded dopes in Pakistan are running around protesting that the US has accidentally dropped a little water on a hardened detained terrorist criminal's hate filled Koran. And its important to remember who these people are...
To gain a better appreciation for these incidents, I think it's important to understand a little bit about the population of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. This is not a benign group of people. These are enemy combatants that are detained because they represent a clear threat and danger to the United States and our allies. These detainees have provided -- have provided and continue to provide valuable intelligence in the war on terror. The information gathered from detainees at Guantanamo has undoubtedly saved the lives of U.S. and coalition forces abroad, and that information has also thwarted threats posed to innocent civilians at home and abroad.
The lives that have been saved by keeping these goons in jail may include yourself or your loved ones.
So, is the writer trying to equate the minor Koranic abuses as an evil equal to the slaughter perpetrated by Muslims against their "Muslim" bothers or is the writer showing the outlandish contrast and pointing out how ridiculous it is that this pompous religious cleric has the temerity to even equate American mishandling as a problem when the people there act so unbelievably barbaric by blowing each other up in sectarian violence?
But the last line, says, "No wonder Pakistanis are questioning the US-Pakistan alliance." This last line is a non-sequitor, I cannot understand how the violence perpetrated by Muslim fanatics that has been going on for decades leads to a questioning of US-Pakistani relationship. It should say something like this...
"It's a wonder why the world takes any Islamic cleric seriously when some minor things happen to a BOOK and all hell breaks loose about it when hardly a word is said by these same zealots when their fellow citizens slaughter and main innocents within their own community."
Koranic abuse....hhhmmmmmm. Infidels, all that are not Muslim, are not even allowed to touch a Koran. How is that even humanly possible in some situations?
how far we infidel Americans must go to avoid offending Moslem sensibilities. It's not enough for us infidels to refrain from damaging or desecrating the Koran in any way; we must not even touch it. Since the matter under discussion is guards and prisoners in a top security military prison where cells are subject to constant searches, for guards not even to touch the prisoners' possessions is quite a tall order
How sensible are Muslim sensibilities? And THE infidels are not just Americans, it probably includes you! Repeat after me....
I am an infidel and I am proud of it!
I digress. But most importantly, to me, the Standard essay couples the wholly negligible Koran abuse with the absolutely frightening unrelated brutal suicide bombings perpetrated by fanatical islamists, sometimes during prayers in Pakistan here [there is a nice picture of a blown up person in this article] and here. I add a few other choice slaughters, a retribution at KFC here and 27 blown to bits here in neighboring Afghanistan. Similar slaughter recorded in the recent past here[19/3/05] and here [10/11/04] and a more complete list of Muslims slaughtering Muslims at a website aptly named "The Religion of Peace" here. And of course the obligatory Islamic Jew hating slaughter of Daniel Pearl here. This really illustrates the difference between us and them!
Now, one other thing, in the Muslim world, if I touch a Koran, since I am a Christian, it is really desecrating the Koran? Come on....how stupid is that hocus-pocus? Doesn't sound like God would get pissed off about something like that.
Desecrate: profane, outrage, violate [violate the sacred character of a place]
Desecrate: deconsecrate [remove the consecration from a person or object]
So, I have a Koran right here that I use sometimes to do research. It was a gift from my Muslim neighbor when I lived in West Africa. So, has something changed with it? The words are the same. And since the American government gave these detainees the Korans to start with, weren't they already desecrated and therefore deconsecrated? See how ridiculous this whole discussion is? It would be so much easier if these Korans burst into fire and turned to dust with God's devil angels flying around turning all people that even open thier eyes into dust like in the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark." If it was only so easy to just shut our eyes. But if we do just shut our eyes, they may come back and blow us up in a suicide bombing.
As I promised earlier, the issue of the Guantanamo Koran abuse is, in my opinion, of such minor magnitude as to be completely underwhelming. Its like an earthquake that measures 1.0 on the Richter Scale. Normal people cannot feel the quake. Dogs can't detect it either or maybe they just don't care since its so small. Only people that have invested in the equipment and that are interested in looking for such things actually measure these things. Koranic abuse would have flown under the media's radar if it weren't for the irresponsible reporting of Newsweek where they falsely claimed a specific incident of a Koran being flushed down the toilet. Becasue we all know that Koran abuse is totally meaningless, so, the media had to make a mountain out of this molehill in order to justify their bad behavior. And here it all is...nearly nothing...koran abuse? Come on! But this one of the prices that we have to pay for our liberty, idiotic discussions about Koran desecration. Normal people would look at these incidents as what they are, nothing.
But it is most important to remember, that in the case of prisoner abuse, it is the intentional use of physical abuse, cultural images or icons systematically to psychologically degrade the prisoner in order to achieve a specific goal that is abhorrent to civilized people. Abuse that is painful and makes then scream and knash teeth and all of this. In other words, there has to be a motive. Despite the military's detailing of incidents where books may have gotten wet or inadvertently mishandled, it does not, in my opinion, appear as if the military was using Koranic abuse as a tool.... at least not anymore if they were before. It seems as if it was, in many cases, minor errors.
But, at the end of the day, would your prefer these Islamic madmen be running around, possibly in your backyard, wreaking their own brand of fanatical horror or have them detained with the cost to you of them having their Korans occassionally being mishandled? The choice is yours.
