Initially, one officer had said the blast was a roadside bomb but an AFP reporter saw a burnt car engine in the street, the remains of the white Opel that exploded.

Intestines, charred flesh and bits of a head littered the road, the AFP reporter said.

Police Captain Mohammed Firas, investigating the blast, said: "It was a suicide car bomb... The only person killed was the bomber."
