I Read Clarence Thomas'es Autobiography.......
It was interesting since I viewed his autobiography not as an explanation of his positions and why he thinks the way that he does, but just as one man's journey. As a constitutional originalist, he is very concerned about affirmative action and its impact on the American experience. It makes sense to be concerned over time that these programs create less competition and allows some sectors of society to have lower expectations. Does anyone want to be facing a serious medical condition requiring surgery, for example, and wonder whether the surgeon was not the best and brightest but moved through the system in order to meet some kind of racial preference program? Why shouldn't one consider this? These are the kind of things that need to be said....
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Tuesday that African-Americans are better served by colorblind programs than affirmative action.I like this man.
Thomas, addressing leaders of historically black colleges, said affirmative action "has become this mantra and there almost has become this secular religiosity about it. I think it almost trumps thinking."
A longtime opponent of race-based preferences in hiring and school admissions, Thomas said, "Just from a constitutional standpoint, I think we're going to run into problems if we say the Constitution says we can consider race sometimes."
