Without government dictates, through competitive forces and the need to continuously become more efficient and effective, railroads in the US have increased fuel efficiency over the last 30 years by more than 100%. Why have they done this? In order to compete and to grow profits, railroads have invested in new technologies, such as software to move goods through their systems more efficiently and a host of other initiatives. Additionally, these efficiency measures also reduce the costs to consumers and other businesses of moving goods around.
