Obstacle to Deficit Cutting: A Nation on Entitlements - WSJ.com
Efforts to tame America's ballooning budget deficit could soon confront a daunting reality: Nearly half of all Americans live in a household in which someone receives government benefits, more than at any time in history. When governments think that they are 'doing good' by redistributing wealth, inevitably, as experieinced in the US, it gets completely out-of-control.
At the same time, the fraction of American households not paying federal income taxes has also grown—to an estimated 45% in 2010, from 39% five years ago, according to the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research organization.
So, look at the statistics above. Fewer people pay taxes, largely its the 'rich' or in other words, people that work hard, save, employ people and are successful get whacked and vilified and the rest live off of these others. More-and-more are collecting monetary benefits and it is only going to get worse. Americans are now addicted to their handouts and in addition, people have been paying into these programs for a lifetime, and now when it comes their time to collect, there is nothing left for them. The programs in the US as well as in Europe were a demographic indulgence where large populations of working people supported much smaller populations of people on the dole. This no longer exists and and the demographics will only get worse over the next couple of decades.
Good luck, USA, by embracing socialism over the past 70 years, you have put yourself in a position
