Or how about we think like moral human beings, and ask the real question: Should we take money from people who earned it and give it to people who think they are entitled to live at the expense of others?

This question holds truth at many levels of thinking. The bar to transfer , divert or subsidize resources has be set at a very very high level. Otherwise, there will be many many with similar needs that also become deserving at the lowest levels.
