Statue Square.....

A mainland visitor once stopped my wife on the street and asked her where the famous statues were in Statue Square, a tourist stop-off for our friends from the north [tours frequently show as many free sites as possible to keep costs down], since he was puzzled by the name and the lack of statues.

Unfortunately, the only statue remaining in Statue Square is one of Sir Thomas Jackson, the chief manager of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank between 1876 and 1902. Huh? The other original residents, mostly British royalty, were moved to other locations and the HSBC lions are now across the street in front of the HSBC building. And it wouldn't be appropriate to keep statues of the former colonial rulers right there next to the legislative council I suppose. So Statue Square is a big....so what!

Now, someone is trying to raise money for a statue of Bruce Lee to put on the Tsim Sha Tsui "Avenue of the Stars" to memorialize the famous Hong Kong film star for his upcoming 65th birthday celebration.
Bruce Lee fans are urging the Hong Kong government to help pay for a bronze statue to mark the actor's 65th birthday in November.

The Bruce Lee Club is planning to erect an 8-foot-2-inch statue of the martial arts legend on the Avenue of Stars, which honors Hong Kong movie stars, said Hew Kuan-yau, a member of the club's committee.
He would be perfect for statue challenged Statue Square, don't you think? Even though he was born an American.
